10 Things...

There is certainly a lot that goes into being an IB Art HL student, or an IB student in general...and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with being talented or a genius. No really, trust me...you can do this with some time and effort.

Ok so there are 10 things in my opinion that each IB Art student should keep in mind...

1. Spend time on each IW page to make it nice (believe me this pays off in the long run). Remember when it comes to sketchbook pages, the importance here is QUALITY, not quantity.
2. Make sure each work of art you complete has meaning to it that can translate in some way to the viewer. This is a simple idea but it quickly became a challenge for me even in my second year.
3. Know that meaning > talent in this class, if you can make each art work have some kind of culture or significance to it, you're completely set. It doesn't have to be some sort of masterpiece from a genius mini-da Vinci child.
4. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. The teacher will give you assignments with seemingly plenty of time as it should take at least 5-6 hours of work per piece, and doing it all in one night like I've tried on multiple occasions does not work out too well, and falling behind in this class could mean never catching up.
5. I guess #4 sort of lead me into this...don't fall behind on art or IW pages. You will not catch up if you get too far behind. I know it may seem like a lot of work at first but it isn't bad at all if you keep up on it and have fun while doing it.
6. Take advantage of after school or study hall time to stay caught up or even keep a step ahead of the normal pace of the class, it can be really helpful. Sometimes its fun to just chill after a school day with your friends and work on art.
7. Talk to the teacher about your art before you finish it. He or she knows what they are doing and might have some helpful tips. Classmates can do this as well, but they can't really help you if you wait the night before a due date to slap a painting together.
8. Get a student discount card at Blicks. If not Blicks, then some other art store. I can't tell you how much money I've saved this way!
9. Have fun in this class. If you're getting frustrated, tone it down. Remember, it isn't about skill or talent in this class, if someone in your class is super talented and making you feel bad, I saw screw 'em! You can score just as high on the exam and have all the more fun during the class, which is the important thing here.
10. This is not a study hall IB HL class. Take it for the art if you're going to take it, and you'll be amazed at the end of the two years if you put your heart into it. If you don't like art and you're looking for an easy class, this isn't it. It's a lot of work and you're going to be stressed out if you slack off.

I just want to wish good luck to all of the new IB Art students. Don't get discouraged if the teacher displays favoritism towards the "talented" students in the class, if that happens you just have to say "pssshhh" and move on. Also, have fun! You might get the "this will be the hardest IB class you will ever take" reel on the first day of school, but it is completely doable. I can't say this enough...just keep up with the work and enjoy making the art and these two years will go by very quickly...enjoy them while you can!

Also, if any of you were wondering...I am not going into art school, and you don't have to feel pressured about it while taking the class. Even if you've never done art before but it's fun, or it might be a hobby of yours...take it and find out what is right for you.

Goodluck!
